I may not know the one guarantee way to success. However, if you ask me the top reason why many aren’t achieving the success they desire in their life, I will attribute that to procrastination.
Let truth be told – everyone procrastinates! Pastors procrastinate. Noble prize winners procrastinate. And yes, even self development coaches like myself procrastinate.
We all know the negative consequences procrastination brings to our life. Yet, how many of us know how to combat it?
While it is true that in the market there are tons of articles, self-help books and courses teaching the public how to stop procrastination, yet how many are succeeding with those techniques or tools?
As a Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP coach, I take pride in coaching others on how to effective employ the various NLP tools and techniques to overcome limitations in their lives – one of it is to stop procrastination.
With the myriad of problems others come to me for help with, one of the most common problems I work on is how to stop procrastination using a popular NLP technique, something which all certified NLP practitioners should know – Chaining Anchors.
Before we delve deeper into how to overcome procrastination with NLP anchoring, let us first understand…
What Is NLP Anchoring
Founded through Ivan Pavlov’s famous experiment done with the dogs, the NLP anchoring process works on the principle that any time a person is in an associated, intense emotional or state, if at the peak of the experience, a specific stimulus is applied, then the two will be linked neurologically.
In a basic anchoring process, we usually just need to develop an anchor for a state we’d like to have more of.
For instance, if you wish to be more confident or motivated in whatever you do, you can develop an anchor for the particular state. The process is generally simple and straightforward.

Very often, the present state that you are in is also known as a stuck state.
Imagine having to run on soft sand wearing a pair of shoes. It will be extremely difficult for you to move around quickly. Likewise, it can be a challenge trying to move from a stuck state quickly to a positive state that you’d like to have more of.
Stop Procrastination with NLP Anchoring
Thus this is where chaining anchors come in handy. There is a need for us to develop a chain of intermediate anchors to bring us from the present state to the desired state, since they are far apart.
Unlike the basic anchoring process, the chaining anchoring process involves a few additional steps of developing separate anchors for the present state as well as each of the intermediate states. This is generally how it works:
- Decide on the state that you’d like to work on. Be clear about your present situation and where you’d like to be. In our example, if you’ve always been procrastinating in life, what do you want to see yourself do instead?
- Figure out what the intermediate states are. These are emotional or mental states which are able to move you from your present state to your desired state. The states should be strong, intense states so that they can flow through the chain easily.
- Anchor on each of the states separately. Remember to test each of the anchors and see if it works.
- Chain up the anchors.
- Enjoy the new state.
- Chaining anchor, although a derivative of basic anchoring, isn’t necessarily as straight-forward. As such, to attempt to explain the whole process and its potential power through words is definitely doing this powerful NLP technique a disservice.
And what better way to be convinced of the power of chaining anchor than to experience it yourself? And that’s exactly what we have intended for you!
