When you learn any skills in life, have it ever dawned to you that you have actually gone through different stages of learning before mastery of that skill? Are you actually aware of your own learning process? If so, did you really enjoy the learning process?

In actual fact, the learning process has often being made more difficult than necessary because of the bad feelings people get when they make mistakes in learning. Yet, the process of learning from our mistakes is really part and parcel of our journey towards realizing the positive outcomes in our lives.

In NLP, all practitioners have to learn and familiarize themselves with the four different stages of learning. This is because as NLP practitioners, we understand that by knowing the different stages of learning, we not only can better track our own progress, we can also any negative feelings about it.

And as mentioned earlier, anyone who seeks mastery in any skills certainly have to go through all the stages of learning, starting with the…

First Stage of Learning: Unconscious Incompetence

First and foremost, you have to realize that learning will always take place only after the stage of blissful ignorance. This is the learning stage when you are still unconscious of your own incompetence in doing something. For instance, this will be the time before you even knew you couldn’t sing or drive. And when you are finally aware of your incompetence, you will start to move to the…

Second Stage of Learning: Conscious Incompetence

For most people, this is usually the most difficult stage of the learning process. This is also the stage of learning where most people may tend to give up. Since you are now aware of your “imperfections”, you now have a choice. Are you going to turn things around and become better at what you do? Or are you simply allowing yourself to sit on your incompetence?

For example, perhaps you would felt “lost” when you were first introduced to some of the NLP tools and techniques. The concepts taught in our NLP articles or videos might even sound alien to you in the first place. Nonetheless, when you will yourself to this natural learning process, you will eventually move beyond the conscious incompetence and step into the…

Third Stage of Learning: Conscious Competence

If you are able to endure through the initial two stages of learning, it is easier to make progress at this stage. Still, you will not be feeling comfortable about doing something and have to be self-conscious in order to perform the task well.

For example, most of our graduates will find themselves consciously competent in practicing many of the NLP tools and techniques they have learned during our NLP certification program. However, it may still take them a substantial amount of effort to put what they have learned into practice since they are still not completely familiar with the NLP techniques.

Likewise, you may have felt nervous when you have just got your driving license and begin driving on the road. It will take some time before you enter into the…

Last Stage of Learning: Unconscious Competence

Finally, you will reach the stage of unconscious competence. This is the final stage of learning a skill when it has become a natural part of you. You will no longer have to think about it when you execute the task.

For our NLP graduates, this is the stage which they are always looking forward to and be able to savor the tremendous benefits of the NLP techniques learned and realize their maximum potential.
